At Elementary POS, we offer a variety of features to make running your business easier, and the ability to categorize sales items is one of them. If you have dozens of sales items, keeping them organized will simplify life for you and your employees, and it will also speed up their workflow. You can filter sales item categories as needed in sales reports, and you can also decide which categories should be available for remote ordering.
How do categories work in Elementary POS, and where do you set them?
You set categories for sales items in the Elementary POS Back Office. In the Sales Items Settings tab, select Sales Categories. When you click on any of the existing categories, a window will open with various options and settings:
Colors and Labels
You can assign any name and color label to the categories. Items from that category will appear under this color in the app, helping you quickly locate them visually. For example, if you know that Non Alcoholic drinks are labeled in green, you’ll be able to find them faster.
Structuring Categories
Practical Example: How to Structure Drink Categories
Let’s say you own a daily bar with a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, tea, and mixed drinks. To organize your sales items, you can follow these steps:
- Create a Drinks category in the Elementary POS office.
- Next, create Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic subcategories, selecting Drinks as the parent category.
- Similarly, you can create Hot and Cold subcategories under Non-Alcoholic Drinks. For example, coffee and tea would fall under Hot, while homemade lemonades, juice, water, etc., would go under Cold.
- Use modifiers to set different flavors for lemonades or even coffee.
How to Assign a Category to an Existing Sales Item
In the Sales Item Settings > Sales Items tab, click the item, just as you would with categories. You can then assign an existing category to it in the expanded window.
TIP: Want to make multiple changes at once? You can also edit categories via Excel. Simply export your categories by clicking “Edit in Excel.” After making the desired changes, import the file back into the system, and you’re done.
